Wheels, Tracks & Rollers Course

Special- Type Vehicles

There are three types of special-type vehicles. The main difference between them is the way they move over the ground. Special-type vehicles examples:

– Wheeled Vehicles includes  Wheeled loaders, Skid steer loader, Graders, Scrapers  etc.)

– Self-laying Tracks designed to move over all types of ground conditions while spreading the weight of the equipment on the tracks, so it is less likely to get stuck. (e.g. Excavator / Digger, Crawler Crane, Crawler loader, Portable Crusher etc.)

– Roller – type Vehicles designed for compacting the road surfaces, clay soils at lower levels (e.g. Steel wheel compactor, double drum steel vibratory roller etc.)

W,T & R LICENCE ENDORSEMENT (W,T,R)

If you drive a special-type vehicle on the road, you must have an W,T or R endorsement on your driver licence.
• The R endorsement is for vehicles that run on rollers.
• The T endorsement is for vehicles that run on self-laying tracks.
• The W endorsement is for vehicles that run on wheels that aren’t forklifts, passenger vehicles, tractors, fire engines, trade vehicles or vehicle recovery service vehicles.

In addition to holding the appropriate special-type vehicle endorsement, you must also hold the appropriate full class of licence for the vehicle you want to operate. The class of licence will depend on the type of vehicle, its weight and the speed at which you are driving

*** The  definition of a road for the application of transport laws is very broad. It includes not only streets and highways, but any place the public has access to, including bridges, culverts, beaches, riverbeds, reserve lands, wharf’s and road shoulders (whether as of right or not). If you drive a forklift in any of these areas, the rules relating to registration, licensing and general driver behavior all apply.
